Sage integration: Sage 200, Sage 50 and Sage Accounting
A Sage integration starts with one question: which Sage? In the UK, Sage 200, Sage 50 and Sage Accounting are different products with different ways in: a cloud API, an API that reaches your own server, or an SDK on a Windows machine. Here is what Sage's official documentation says about each, the limits that shape the design, and when a marketplace connector is enough.

Which Sage do you have? Three products, three routes
The name on the invoice from your reseller matters more than anything else on this page. The integration route, the cost and the risks depend on the product, its version and your licence. This is the starting point, based on Sage's developer documentation:
| Product | Where it runs | Official way in | What to check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sage 200 Standard Online | Sage's cloud | Sage 200 API (REST, Sage ID sign-in) | Version, modules and user roles |
| Sage 200 Professional | Usually your own or your partner's server | Sage 200 API, reached through Microsoft 365 / Entra ID | Microsoft 365 tenant, connector install, business partner involvement |
| Sage 50 Accounts | Windows PCs and servers in your office | Sage 50 SDK (Sage Data Objects) via the Sage Developers programme; read-only ODBC | Version, network set-up, who can install software |
| Sage Accounting | Sage's cloud | Sage Accounting API v3.1 (REST, OAuth 2.0) | Plan and the businesses a user can access |
How the Sage 200 API works
Sage documents one Sage 200 API for both Sage 200 Standard Online and Sage 200 Professional. It is a RESTful API with GET, POST, PUT and DELETE, and OData-style query options such as $filter, $select, $top and $expand. The API reference groups endpoints into Sales, Purchases, SOP (sales orders), POP (purchase orders), Stock, Price Book, Nominal, Cash Book and Financials, subject to the modules you have.
To build against it, the developer signs up on Sage's developer portal, subscribes to the API (Sage calls the product Sage 200 Unlimited) and sends a subscription key with every request. Client credentials are requested through an online form; if the developer has no Sage account number, Sage says the developer account form can take up to 72 hours. Requests are authorised by a Sage ID user, so the integration can only do what that user's roles allow.
Two figures from the getting-started guide shape the design. Access tokens last 480 minutes and refresh tokens up to 90 days. A GET without $top returns only the first 500 records; on versions released after February 2019, $top can return up to 5,000. Large syncs therefore page through results and filter by date rather than pulling everything.
Sage 200 Professional on your own server: what has to be in place
With Sage 200 Professional, the API is not open to the internet by default. Sage's help pages say access now uses Microsoft 365 with Microsoft Entra ID authentication, and the API service settings are configured automatically when the Microsoft Entra private network connector is installed on the Sage 200 server. Sage describes the earlier method, a Sage ID with an externally facing web server, as the one you switch away from.
In practice, before a developer writes a line of code, someone needs to have:
- A Microsoft 365 subscription for the business. Sage's setup guide says a unique Microsoft 365 tenant must be used per customer.
- Global Administrator rights for some of the Entra ID steps, such as creating the enterprise application.
- The connector installed on the Sage 200 server, by whoever administers it; we agree in writing who that is.
- Users mapped: each Sage 200 user that the integration acts as needs the right Entra ID email in System Administration.
- Your Sage business partner on board: Sage's guide gives the partner the job of onboarding the licence and asking Sage to enable the API.
Sage 50 Accounts: desktop software, SDK and ODBC
Sage 50 Accounts is installed software: it runs on Windows PCs and, in multi-user set-ups, on a server in your office. There is no public cloud REST API for it in Sage's UK developer documentation. Sage's knowledge base lists two official routes instead.
The Sage 50 SDK, known as Sage Data Objects (SDO), lets software on the same network read and write Sage 50 data. Sage says the SDK requires a subscription to the Sage Developers programme, and the documentation is downloaded with a Sage ID linked to that subscription. ODBC gives read-only access, which Sage describes as unsupported, with fields liable to change or be removed. SData is also listed as unsupported.
So a Sage 50 integration usually means a small service on a machine next to Sage 50 that syncs with your shop, CRM or portal on a schedule. It has to survive Sage 50 upgrades, which on a network have to be applied to every machine at once.
What works on Sage 50 depends on the version, the licence and how your office network is set up. We check it in discovery, with your reseller if needed, before quoting.
Sage Accounting API (cloud)
Sage Accounting, formerly Sage Business Cloud Accounting, has a REST API whose current version for the UK and Ireland is v3.1. It uses OAuth 2.0 with a three-legged flow, so a real user of the business authorises the connection. Sage's best-practice guide publishes these limits (checked on 5 November 2026):
| Limit or rule | Value from Sage's documentation |
|---|---|
| Requests per app per day | 1,296,000 |
| Concurrent requests per app | 150 |
| Over the limit | HTTP 429; Sage recommends wait-and-retry |
| Items per page | Up to 200 |
| Incremental sync | updated_or_created_since and deleted_since filters |
| Test environment | No sandbox; 30-day trial accounts per region |
Sage also warns that idempotency is not supported by default on POST requests, and that after a 500 error the transaction may already exist. The integration must check before retrying, or you get duplicate invoices.
Connecting Sage with Shopify, HubSpot, your CRM or AI
The Sage UK Marketplace lists partner apps that you can filter by Sage 200, Sage 50 and Sage Accounting, with categories such as E-Commerce and Data Integration. If your shop or CRM is a mainstream one, look there first and test the connector on a copy of your data.
On AI, we have not found an official Sage MCP server in Sage's developer documentation (checked on 5 November 2026). Third-party servers exist, but they are not Sage products, and each one needs reviewing for where your data goes. Connecting Claude or ChatGPT to Sage usually means a small layer over the official API with minimum permissions, human approval before anything is posted and a log of every action; that is what AI agents connected to your systems cover. Whether providers train on API data is answered in our FAQ.
Marketplace connector, iPaaS or bespoke Sage integration
If a standard connector solves your case, we will say so, and you should not pay for development.
| Option | When it fits | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Sage Marketplace app | A mainstream shop or CRM, one direct flow, standard Sage set-up. | It will not follow your rules: trade price lists, several warehouses, custom fields or approval steps. |
| iPaaS or Zapier, Make, n8n | Cloud Sage products, simple flows, low volume and someone in-house to maintain them. | Little help with Sage 50 on a local network; failures are hard to trace as flows grow. |
| Bespoke integration | Your own business rules, two-way sync, Sage 200 Professional on premises, Sage 50 or several systems. | It is a project with maintenance. Not worth it if a connector already does 90% of the work. |
Risks of a Sage integration, and how we approach it
Most problems appear weeks after go-live. With Sage, these are the ones to plan for:
- Wrong product or version assumed: Sage 50, Sage 200 and Sage Accounting share a name, not an API. We confirm product, version and licence first.
- Infrastructure on your side: for Sage 200 Professional and Sage 50, the integration depends on a server, a connector or a local service. We agree in writing who installs and looks after each part.
- Upgrades: a Sage version upgrade can change fields or behaviour. We test the integration on the new version before you upgrade live.
- Duplicates and retries: we store an external reference (the order number) and check it before writing.
- Which system owns each field: prices, stock and customer details have one owner, set in writing, so systems do not overwrite each other.
We start with a short discovery: product and version, the flows you need, what your reseller or IT provider has to do and how much data moves. Then you get one fixed price per project, a working demo every two weeks and the code in your own repository; see how we work. SocketStack is not a Sage partner, reseller or member of a Sage partner programme; we build on Sage's published APIs and SDKs. Frequently asked questions
Does Sage 50 have an API?
Not a public cloud REST API in Sage's UK developer documentation. Sage 50 Accounts is integrated through the Sage 50 SDK (Sage Data Objects), which requires a Sage Developers programme subscription, or read through ODBC, which Sage describes as unsupported. What fits depends on your version and licence; we check it in discovery.
Can Sage 200 Professional on our own server be integrated?
Yes, through the Sage 200 API. Sage's documentation says access uses Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, with a connector installed on the Sage 200 server and your business partner enabling the API. That set-up needs to be in place before development starts.
Can I connect Sage to Shopify or HubSpot without building anything?
Often, yes. The Sage UK Marketplace lists partner apps filtered by Sage product, including e-commerce and data integration categories. A bespoke integration makes sense when you need your own rules or a third system in the middle.
Can I connect Sage to Claude or ChatGPT?
We have not found an official Sage MCP server in Sage's developer documentation as of 5 November 2026. It can be done over the official APIs with minimum permissions, human approval before posting and a log of every action.
Are you a Sage partner?
No. SocketStack is not a Sage partner or reseller. We work with Sage's published APIs and SDKs, alongside your Sage business partner where the set-up needs one, and the integration code is yours.
